Uncertainty impact when protecting a score

Sometimes I notice that when a team is protecting a score, their actions become less predictable and more cautious. It’s like they are unsure about the best move, even in simple situations. That uncertainty seems to grow as the game goes on, which makes everything look less controlled. I’m wondering if this is just part of the pressure or if there is a deeper explanation for this pattern.

A useful way to look at this is described in https://programminginsider.com/the-psychology-of-chasing-vs-defending-totals/ . It highlights that defending situations lack a clear endpoint, which increases uncertainty. As a result, players may hesitate more and take safer options. This ongoing uncertainty can gradually affect confidence and make performance appear less stable over time.
